The newsroom of Jukola works hard 24 hours a day during the competition weekend. One part of the team participated in the content production of the site of Louna-Jukola during winter and spring. Editor-in-chief Hanna Tähkävuori, who is in the shift in the early hours of Sunday trained for this moment already in Kuopio-Jukola. Now the work is running with the routine.

– The gang of the newsroom is great! The enthusiastic volunteers come to work before their shift starts and continue overtime. Well into twenty stories were published on Saturday, she tells.

One of the volunteers in the newsroom is Jorma Erkkilä. He releaves that he has participated in more than 40 Jukola events, in both writing and in the orienteering outfit.

– Actually, this is a jubilee year, as I happened to start orienteering exactly fifty years ago, he mentions. He runs orienteering schools in team Helsingin Suunnistajat and coaches orienteering.

Erkkilä, who is now retired from his work as a journalist in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, is happy that in Louna-Jukola he can concentrate on the essential, on writing.

– I have written during my work shifts about the opening ceremonies, the finish of Venla relay and the start of Jukola relay.

First time in voluntary work with words

Nearly all stories in the News section of the website are translated into Swedish, English and Russian. One of the translators, Pernilla Karlsson, is a volunteer for the first time, though she is familiar with Jukola event thanks to the orienteering hobby of her father.

– Languages have always been very natural for me. I come from a bilingual family and I am a high-school student in IB Diploma Programme in English. I wanted to see how this kind of a big event is created and how made people are needed, Pernilla tells.

She tells that she translated five stories into Swedish before the event and another five stories during the competition.

– Sometimes I get stuck in finding words, but they can be solved by saying the idea in another way. It was worth coming here, the gang is really nice, she commends.
