The competition map is usually the most valued memorabilia from a competition for an orienteer. Even for those, who’ll receive a medal or trophy for their success. Typically in orienteering competitions the maps are only returned after the competition is completed, to keep the map a secret from those whose competition hasn’t begun yet. So are things in Jukola as well.

The returnable maps of Jukola

Due to the huge proportions of Jukola the competitors won’t receive the maps they used, but a separately and beforehand printed specific ”returnable map”. So altogether there’s two maps per competitor required for Jukola, and additional maps which are printed for the public as memorabilia. For Louna-Jukola Multiprint printed over 50 000 maps!

In the Jukola-relay the returnable maps have usually been exactly as the ones each competitor had with them during their leg. With those maps the problem has been that the competitor can’t see where other courses have been nor on which ”wrong forking” the competitor visited during the race.

The other type of a returnable map has been the so called ”all controls -map”. In this map one can see all the controls that were used for the race as well as all forkings, from which one can see how the different courses were designed in the terrain. This kind of a map gives a person good idea of the whole competition, but going through one’s own track can be tedious and hard to figure out for many. During the last years in addition to the competitors getting their own maps, teams have been given a single ”all controls -map” and additionally these maps have been sold separately for those who are interested.

In the returnable map of Louna-Jukola the competitor’s own course and the ”all controls -map have been combined.”.

Multiprint is one of the most visible partners of Louna-Jukola. Due to the flexibility and 10-coloured offset-printing press of Multiprint we have been able to combine the best qualities of the former types of the returnable maps. The printing of this year’s returnable maps is corresponding to the competition maps. In addition all the other controls that were used are visible in a slightly smaller and dimmer circles as well as the forkings, which are familiar from the ”all controls -maps”.
