The city of Jämsä has representative teams both in Venla and Jukola relays. – City’s teams have been chosen carefully, team manager Katja Pohjoismäki assures.

Venla team consists of (according the running order) Riitta Hjelt, Heli Helminen, Anna-Liisa Juurinen and Kaija Hakkarainen as anchor. Anna-Liisa is team’s only newcomer in orienteering competition while the others have lots of experience. – I’ve prepared for the competition mostly by eating lots of carbs, Anna-Liisa laughs.

The competition number of the team is 1178 and the objective is to get better placing. – I’ll run the first leg and I promised that I’ll come to the changeover among under five hundred runners, so I’m quite nervous.

I prepared myself for the race by biking from Jämsä town centre to the competition place, tells Riitta. The anchor of the team, Kaija, takes a calm attitude to her leg. – My objective would be time that is under two hours, she says.

The teams of the city wear T-shirts which have Jämsän äijä (the old chap of Jämsä), who’s told to be the father of all stories in Jämsä, on back. Will this first participation in Jukola relay start new stories? Maybe at least the tradition, hopefully Jämsä has also a team in Kuopio-Jukola in 2014.

Citys’s Jukola’s team members in order: Jussi Lehtimäki, Pasi Pohjoismäki, Tuomas Hjelt, Erkki Mäntylä, Reetta Lakanen and Juha Nokelainen (as anchor).
